When To Come In

Signs You May Need A Filling

Cavities are easier and cheaper to treat when they are small. Book a check-up if you notice any of these.

Sensitivity

A sharp twinge with hot, cold or sweet food and drinks.

Pain when biting

Discomfort when you chew on one side of your mouth.

A hole or dark spot

A visible pit, stain or dark mark on the surface of a tooth.

Food getting stuck

Food catching in the same spot every time you eat.

Chipped or cracked

A small break from biting something hard or an old injury.

Old filling worn

A filling that feels rough, loose or has fallen out.

If a filling can wait six months, we will tell you so.

How A Filling Works

Four simple steps, explained to you as we go. You can ask us to pause at any point.

  1. Check and X-ray

We examine the tooth and take a digital X-ray to see how deep the cavity goes.

  2. Numb the area

A local anaesthetic so you feel pressure, not pain.

  3. Clean and fill

The decay is removed and the tooth is filled with a material shaded to match.

  4. Shape and polish

We check your bite and polish the filling so it feels like your own tooth.

Most fillings take 30 to 60 minutes

After Your Filling

What To Expect Afterwards

Most people go straight back to work or school. A few simple things help the filling settle in.

  • Wait for the numbness to wear off

Usually two to three hours. Avoid hot drinks and chewing on that side until then.

  • Mild sensitivity is normal

Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is expected and fades on its own.

  • Brush and floss as usual

Keep up your normal routine and book a cleaning every six months.

  • Call us if something feels wrong

If your bite feels high or the pain gets worse after a few days, call reception and we will see you.

Fix It Before It Gets Bigger
